The Burris Veracity PH 4-20×50 scope is one of Burris’ newer offerings, marketed as a “Smart Scope.” I was really looking forward to reviewing this Burris Veracity PH. While I tend to lean toward European glass manufacturers, I’ve always been intrigued by the technology behind smart scopes. I also have experience with another smart optic and wanted to see how Burris’ implementation compared—especially in a true hunting context.
Before diving in, it’s worth noting that smart scopes aren’t legal in all states or for all hunting applications. Be sure to check your local and state regulations before considering one.
First Impressions & Setup – Burris Veracity PH 4-20×50 Scope Review
One of the first things that stood out to me about the Burris Veracity PH scope was the weight. For the feature set, Burris did a great job keeping the Veracity PH reasonably light. The advertised weight is 29.1 ounces, and mine came in just over 30 ounces with the included flip caps installed. As you can imagine, with lightweight scopes there is always a durability concern, and I was curious how they achieved such a lightweight smart scope with a 50mm objective. More on that later, though.
I mounted the scope on my Weatherby 307 CT rifle chambered in .240 Weatherby Magnum. Pairing this Burris Veracity PH scope with a lightweight rifle featuring a carbon stock and carbon barrel resulted in a very well-balanced setup. Unlike my first smart scope, which was much heavier—and made my rifle feel extremely top-heavy—the Veracity PH felt right at home on this platform.
What Is A “Smart Scope”?
A traditional rifle scope is a purely optical and mechanical device that relies on the shooter to estimate distance, account for bullet drop and wind, and manually dial or hold using the reticle based on experience or a dope chart. A smart scope, on the other hand, integrates electronics, sensors, and ballistic software to calculate a firing solution in real time, often using inputs such as range, angle, temperature, and atmospheric conditions. That range and/or ballistic solution is then displayed in the scope or applied digitally, reducing guesswork and speeding up the shot process while still allowing the shooter to maintain a normal sight picture.
The Burris Veracity PH scope uses the rifle profile uploaded into the scope to translate that data into a heads-up display in yards for a quick and easy shoot-to distance. For instance, when you dial to, say, 4 MOA on the turret, it will show the range in yards or meters in the Heads-Up Display. This is especially useful when you’ve ranged a target and know the exact distance of the shot. Simply dial your turret until the display shows the distance you are shooting, and you are ready to go.
This can also be useful on shorter-distance shots where you are required to guess the distance, but being super precise is not necessary to make a clean, ethical shot. The result is a scope that makes getting set up for a shot quicker, easier, and more reliable.

Ballistic Software & Performance – Burris Veracity PH 4-20×50 Scope
I chose a somewhat unique caliber and bullet combination specifically to test the Burris ballistic software and the communication between the app and the scope. I came away genuinely impressed with both.
To be fair, the .240 Weatherby Magnum is an extremely flat-shooting cartridge, and my testing extended out to 700 yards. Even so, I was consistently impacting 2 MOA plates from 100 to 700 yards. And while I didn’t perform any specific tracking tests, that level of consistency speaks well to both the ballistic engine and the scope’s tracking.

The Burris Ballistic App integrates seamlessly with the Veracity PH. Setup is straightforward:
- Download the app
- Create a rifle profile
- Input your ballistic data (caliber, bullet, muzzle velocity, zero distance, and environmental inputs)
- Pair the scope via Bluetooth.

Once synced with the ballistic app using your phone, ballistic solutions are transmitted directly to the optic and you are ready to hit the field. Once your rifle profile has been uploaded to the scope, simply range the target, dial accordingly using the heads-up display, and shoot—no dope cards, no guesswork, and no manual calculations.
Reticle, Illumination & Hunting Use – Burris Veracity PH 4-20×50 Scope
Without question, I’m more of a hunter than a tactical shooter. Because of that, I generally prefer second focal plane optics. That said, if I’m running a first focal plane scope, illumination is a requirement for me—and the Veracity PH delivers here.
RETICLE DESIGN: The reticle is a perfectly simple design for the hunter. The 1 MOA subtensions for both windage and elevation offer exactly what is needed in a hunting scenario. Most of us prefer a clean, simple reticle when hunting, and the Burris Veracity PH delivers just that.
INTEGRATED DIGITAL LEVEL: Another awesome feature built into the Veracity PH is a digital level. This eliminates the need to mount a bubble level to the scope. Again, some states don’t allow this level of electronics when hunting, but if this feature is legal, it sure is nice.
ILLUMINATION: The illumination is adjustable, offering 4 levels to match the environmental conditions you are facing, making it usable from bright daylight all the way into low light. That became especially important during my daughter’s hunt.
For that hunt, I didn’t plan on using the ballistic features at all. I had a specific location in mind, knew the shot distance would be close, and kept the scope turned down to 4x with illumination on. The expected shot distance was under 80 yards.
We had an unusually hot fall, so I waited until cooler weather before taking her out. When the day finally came, she insisted that Grandpa come along—and I’m glad he did. While I was still messing with the TriggerCam, he quietly let me know a doe had stepped into the small meadow we were hunting.
My daughter got behind the tripod, settled in, and steadied herself. The .240 Weatherby and Hammer bullet did exactly what they were supposed to do, dropping the doe where she stood. That was an incredibly proud moment as a dad.
Yes, the optic was overkill for that scenario—but it performed flawlessly when it mattered.
Image Quality – Burris Veracity PH 4-20×50 Scope
Image quality is solid throughout the magnification range. Resolution, color contrast, and edge-to-edge clarity are all more than adequate for long-range hunting applications.
While it doesn’t quite match ultra-premium optics in low-light performance, the Veracity PH delivers dependable image quality where it counts. For its intended purpose (hunting), the glass performs well. For context, I would put the glass/optical quality similar to many of the $700-ish scopes that I have tested. I thought this was quite good given the additional Smart Scope feature set you get with this scope.
Turrets, Parallax & Zero Stop – Burris Veracity PH 4-20×50 Scope
The elevation turret on the Veracity PH is not locking—something that would be nice given that this is designed as a hunting scope. When hauling a rifle around in the mountains, it can be easy to unintentionally bump the turret off zero. Because of this, it’s always a good idea to double-check every so often, and especially before executing your shot.
I found turret tracking to be reliable throughout my testing. One particularly unique aspect is that the turret does not have your traditional clicks when adjusting elevation. This does take some getting used to, as most of us are likely used to—and prefer—that positive feedback from clicking through our elevation adjustment. That said, adjustments are repeatable once you become familiar with the system.
The parallax adjustment of the Burris Veracity PH is smooth and precise, and illumination remains subtle without overpowering the reticle in low light. The zero stop system is straightforward, dependable, easy to set, and allows you to confidently return to zero in dynamic hunting situations.
The windage turret is capped, as is the case with a majority of scopes designed for the hunting application. Personally, I prefer a capped windage turret as I prefer to hold for wind. Given that the Heads-Up Display (HUD) gives you the wind hold value (if wind is input), you’ll have your wind hold right in the display so you can then use those 1 MOA subtensions to execute the shot. A pretty slick system.
Durability, Reliability & Tracking – Burris Veracity Scope
The Burris Veracity PH scope feels robust and well-built. It handled recoil, transport to and from the range, hunting trips, and environmental exposure without issue. Throughout more than a year of testing, the scope held zero and tracked reliably through repeated dialing cycles.
This is a scope clearly designed for real hunting conditions—not just range use, and that’s exactly how I tested it. Real-world hunting and shooting conditions. While I fully understand that the main tube body is a lightweight design, and as such you can’t expect this scope to be as durable as a more heavy-duty scope, it was plenty durable for the use I put it through and never once lost its zero.
What’s in the Box – Burris Veracity PH 4-20×50 Scope
The Burris Veracity PH scope arrives with your typical accessories, but it is nice that it comes with a sun shade and two batteries, given that this is a smart scope that operates on batteries. Here’s a complete list of what is included with the scope:
- Burris Veracity PH 4–20×50 scope
- Lens covers
- Sunshade
- Two batteries
- Owner’s manual
- Burris literature
Everything is packaged nicely and securely and presents well.
What I Liked : Burris Veracity PH 4-20×50 Scope Review
During my testing of the Burris Veracity PH smart scope, I came to love a lot of things about it. Being a smart scope and having the ability to connect to the Burris app via Bluetooth brings another element to a scope review. That being said, it’s also important that a scope perform as a “traditional” scope as not every situation calls for the use of the smart scope features. Here were the things I liked the most about this scope:
- Purpose-built for long-range hunting
- Useful magnification range
- Lightweight for the feature set
- Reliable tracking and zero stop
- Ballistic app is intuitive and fast
- Strong value for the technology offered
What I Didn’t Like: Burris Veracity PH 4-20×50 Scope Review
Given the price point of the Burris Veracity PH scope compared to other smart scopes on the market, you wouldn’t expect it to be top tier, and that’s what I found. While solid in a lot of areas, there were a few things I didn’t love:
- Turret feel isn’t as refined as top-tier premium optics
- Slightly heavier than minimalist hunting scopes
- Image quality isn’t class-leading in extreme low light
- Burris doesn’t offer a ballistic rangefinder that pairs with this scope (via Bluetooth).
While I didn’t love the above things about the scope, for the price point I consider those things to be tradeoffs rather than deal breakers. Sure, you can find a smart scope that would do a better job with the things I didn’t love, but you will likely pay a lot more.
Final Thoughts: Burris Veracity PH 4-20×50 Scope Review
The Burris Veracity PH 4–20×50 scope is a well-executed optic designed specifically for hunters who shoot at distance. It blends modern ballistic technology, reliable tracking, and solid glass performance into a package that performs where it matters.
It may not replace ultra-premium optics for every user, but it offers excellent functionality and value for the serious long-range hunter. Again, these smart scopes aren’t legal in all states or in all hunting situations, so you’ll want to confirm if they are legal for where and what you are hunting before you head out.
If your priorities include dependable dialing, useful ballistic integration, and real-world hunting performance—without paying flagship prices—the Burris Veracity PH 4–20 deserves a hard look.
